Hello and Welcome to my newest blog! Yeah, I’ve been running a couple of other (Offical) Fansites like The Neptunes, Mr. Carmack and Timbaland but I finally had the time to make a site all about the Canadian producer Louis Kevin Celestin also known as Kaytranada. By the time he was only 14 years old, he started producing and mixing his own music. Constantly finding himself at a crossroad between following his musical passion or his parents’ demands, Kaytranada decided to take the high road early on.

Caught in a decision between fulfilling his mother’s wishes of finishing school and touring Europe, he bet all odds against himself and headed across the pond to show his art to the world. Within a few years of making this life-changing decision, Kay’s music transcended. Starting from having a Soundcloud presence rooted in his parent’s basement, he soon found himself walking with the stars. This is the start of a new beginning, until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. Pusha T Teases Another Clipse Reunion On ‘It’s Almost Dry’: ‘I'm Pressing For An Album’

Pusha T teamed up with his brother No Malice for a Clipse reunion on Nigo’s “Punch Bowl” in March, but the collaborative work might not end there. During his recent interview with Hot 97, Push revealed he has another verse from No Malice and talked about what it was like to work alongside him once again.

“First of all, just being in the studio with him was amazing,” he explained. “Already from ‘Punch Bowl,’ everybody was like, ‘I told y’all his brother was better than him!’ Like, that’s all the conversation is. It’s cool man, it’s cool! And when y’all hear this other verse, it’s crazy! Like, it’s so good. I’m glad we got in to do those two.”

With Pusha T’s new album It’s Almost Dry dropping imminently, it’s likely the unreleased verse will end up on the project. He also revealed he’s pushing for another Clipse album, but said it’s all down to No Malice.

“You know me, I’m pressing for an album,” he said. “I’m pressing. I mean, he’s just chilling, he’s not pressing. I do have the like, ‘Little brother, I can ask you to do things,’ thing. So, that’s how I got these. And it just made sense, you know, the Nigo thing. He was there. I was particular about it [being credited as Clipse] … I just want him to see that.”

Clipse appeared on Nigo’s I Know NIGO! album alongside features from Kid Cudi, Tyler, The Creator, A$AP Rocky, Pop Smoke, Lil Uzi Vert and Gunna.

On “Punch Bowl,” Pusha T and No Malice spit a verse each over production from longtime collaborators, The Neptunes. As a duo, the track marked their first time working with Pharrell and Chad Hugo since 2009’s Til the Casket Drops.

Before “Punch Bowl,” Clipse’s last feature landed on Kanye West’s “Use This Gospel” in 2009, appearing on his Jesus Is King album.

Q&A: Hit-Boy talks Grammy producer nod, rapper aspirations

The 34-year-old producer recently spoke with The Associated Press about the relevance of winning a Grammy, his rapper aspirations, how Pharrell Williams’ advice helped him and whether he thinks his producer-of-the-year nomination was long overdue. Answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: Where did you get that philosophy?

Hit-Boy: That came from Pharrell. He told me this in 2007. I was working with Teyana Taylor, who was signed to him at the time. I had pretty much did like a whole EP or album worth of music for her. He was hype about it. He was a fan of my production. It was mutual respect. I was able to get on the phone with him. We spoke about the struggles and bumping your head and just going through the game. You’re going to have to deal with it regardless. But if you love the music, you will always get back to the center. That’s something I’ll never let go.

Pusha T: “‘Something In The Water’ Is Moving To D.C.”

Pharrell Williams’ music festival is moving To D.C said Pusha T during a TV interview but did not reveal when the festival will be held. “Something in the Water is going to be in Washington D.C.,” rapper Pusha T, who lives in Norfolk, said during an episode of Showtime’s “Desus & Mero.” Something in the Water was the brainchild of Williams, who was asked by the city’s police chief at the time to help bring structure to College Beach Weekend, an annual informal gathering of college students before exam week.

“Something in the Water is probably one of the best things he’s had his hand in and created,” Pusha T said on the show. Williams decided not to bring the festival back to his hometown this year due to frustration with the city’s handling of the death of a cousin, Donovon Lynch, who was shot by a police officer responding to a chaotic night of violence at the Oceanfront last spring. “That was a toxic situation that was hurtful to my family,” Williams said last during at a forum on diversity and inclusion in business held at Norfolk State University.

Tha Liks Talk Working With The Neptunes (Video) (2022)

West Coast trio Tha Alkaholiks (a.k.a. Tha Liks) carved out their own fun-loving lane in the ’90s with the albums 21 & Over, Coast II Coast and Likwidation, collaborating with legends such as Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Q-Tip and Madlib along the way. Their commercial peak wouldn’t come until 2001, though, when Tash, J-Ro and E-Swift released their fourth album X.O. Experience, which debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200. The project was buoyed by the single “Best U Can,” produced by one of the biggest hitmakers on the planet at the time, The Neptunes.

While most other artists were clamoring to secure one of Pharrell and Chad Hugo‘s infectious, futuristic beats, Tha Liks needed convincing. In a clip from their newly-released Drink Champs interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, the L.A. natives revealed how Pharrell (who also handled hook duties on “Best U Can”) had to pitch them on the song, with his argument resting on the influence it’ll have on female fans at shows.

“Pharrell sold that shit. He made me think differently as a producer,” E-Swift said. “He told us, ‘Look, when you start doing this live at shows, bitches gonna get on stage and pull their titties out.’ Tash added, “He was like, ‘Don’t do this song without bitches on stage.’ And ever since then, we ain’t never did a show without bitches on stage!” Lo and behold, Pharrell was right. “The first show we did and we did that song, what happened?” E-Swift asked rhetorically. “So I was like, ‘This guy’s a visionary!’ He had the vision, bro, and we went with it and it worked.”

Further vindicating Skateboard P’s prediction, “Can U Be” cracked the top 20 of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart and has since become Tha Alkaholiks’ most successful song. “That sold the most records we ever sold, singles wise,” Tash concluded. Women have long played a central role in Pharrell’s music and life, with the superproducer waxing poetic about the opposite sex during his own Drink Champs interview in 2020.

“Women are the greatest gift to us,” he said. “They actually give us life. I don’t understand hating women in any way, shape or form because that’s forgetting where you actually come from. Every last human being walking around here came from a woman. How could you hate what gave you life?” He added, “I love them from a loving place, I love them from a lustful place, I love them all the way around. They’ve always been a huge motivational force for my music. Pharrell Williams Talks About ‘OTHERtone’ Season 2 and Why Charlie Wilson is the ‘GOAT’ (Interview) (2021)

You have infinite ways of expressing yourself, whether that be through music, music production, videos, fashion, etc. Why a radio show?

It’s a music show that has conversation, versus a conversation platform that also has music. That sense of discovery is important to me. I love hearing the music, and Scott Vener is like the quintessential bloodhound. He knows which way the wind blows. We all have natural listening habits, and then we have like our sources, and Scott is one of my sources. And so why not share this opportunity with him, and still get that amazing sense of discovery, but also share it with everybody at the same time while having conversations with people in between?

There have been a few different iterations of “OTHERtone.” Why was that important to you to go back to Apple, which is where it all started?

I enjoyed the partnership, and I enjoyed the extended team. It was just a very beautiful experience. Think about it — one of the biggest technology companies in the world affords you the opportunity to discover music and share it with people at same time, while having interesting conversations interwoven.

Your upcoming guests include Soulja Boy, actor Yara Shahidi and internet comedian Druski. Was there an effort to diversify the types of guests you’re bringing on for Season 2?

Yeah. And there’s also episodes that we did where we didn’t have the music — it was just purely the conversation — and those are coming as well. Those will be woven into the music ones because there’s just so much music. There’s more music than conversation out there in the world, and it’s necessary because music brings people together. Music is the vehicle for the dialogue, and we need more of that. The human species is in trouble, and we need more ways to congregate and galvanize. And this is just another way for us to do our part, to bring people together.

You’ve said that “OTHERtone” is like school, or education, to you. What do you mean by that and what have you learned from doing the shows so far?

It’s a crash course. You’re hearing what the collective conscious is thinking one artist at a time, or one song at a time. There are trillions and trillions of drips of water in the ocean. When you see it, you see the ocean, but drip by drip… man, it’s the collective force that makes the ocean, and that’s what you’re hearing when you hear this music. You basically have one drip at a time of what mankind is thinking. And it’s such a beautiful harmonic distraction from all of the divisiveness that’s going on right now.

What else can we expect from from Season 2?

Man, just prepare to go on a ride. It’s gonna be good for you when you’re jogging, when you’re in a traffic jam, when you’re on your flight. That sense of discovery is a really beautiful thing. There’s nothing like a new restaurant or television series that someone’s just told you about. And all of the good stuff usually doesn’t have an ad — it’s always word of mouth. And that’s what this is… it’s another one of those amazing experiences you get to share with people at the dinner table or at the water cooler.

“OTHERtone” is not only your show — it’s a network. What can you tell me about the other shows?

We have “The Prescription,” which is hosted by a good friend of mine who’s a bishop. He just sees around the corner like none other, and it always refers back to some sort of universal truth. The conversations that he had there are incredibly enlightening — you watch somebody read someone with no prior warning and tell them things about themselves, people in their lives, where they’re headed. It’s magical.

And then there’s Michael Harriot, who is an incredible writer who was the first one to use the phrase “Black as fuck” or “Black AF.” He [coined the term] Black Twitter, and he was the first to say who could be “invited to the cookout.” The things that he says and the things that you will learn, not only about the African diaspora or our relationship with our beautiful nation, but things in the world as they pertain to Black folks, is just incredibly enlightening. You walk away a couple IQ points higher.

The Yumi girls have these really amazing conversations that work perfectly for people who have children. It’s not about Pampers and baby formula; it’s more about introducing the right diet to your child to make sure that things stimulate the right synaptic connections. These are really helpful things for parents, and I would know because I have 1900 children. The network is really shaping up, and there are some other shows that I am not at liberty to discuss at the moment, but what we’re doing is really interesting.

Speaking of your own kids, what type of music are they gravitating toward, and how much of a role are you playing in introducing them to stuff?

Rocket [age 12] knows all the rap stuff. And my other children, they just like what they hear. But they’re all studying music for real. So we’re listening to [Shinichi] Suzuki in the house right now.

You had a viral moment a couple months ago when you were talking to Dave Grohl about how disco and The Gap Band influenced his Nirvana drumming. Why did that resonate with you and so many other people on the internet?

I loved hearing that Nirvana and Charlie Wilson had a connection. That was just mindblowing to me. As soon as he said it, it just clicked. He was so clear about it. Charlie Wilson is the GOAT, bro. Charlie Wilson, the Gap Band… all of that was unbelievable. My parents used to play that music, and it’s always been an honor to work with Uncle Charlie. Seeing him get his flowers so many times with Kanye and Tyler, the Creator, and just continuing to be out there, still doing it and sounding amazing… and then to wake up one day and hear that [Wilson’s] music affected Dave Grohl, and so much so that it would end up on “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” What? Charlie is the GOAT.

Sean Paul Talks Working With The Neptunes In 2002 & Getting Kicked Out By Justin Timberlake

In a recent radio interview with DJ 4EIGN, Sean relived the mortifying tale of the time Justin Timberlake kinda, sorta kicked him out of a studio session. It was circa 2002, back when Sean was floating on the highs from his 2X Platinum album Dutty Rock. The 29-year-old Dancehall sensation at the time was called to Virginia by Pharrell to voice on Beenie Man’s energetic banger, Bossman, which also featured Lady Saw. Paul said after laying down his bars on the track, the producers had asked him to stick around a bit longer while Beenie took the next flight out. He reappeared the following day and went on to record the track Bubble, and a collaboration with Clipse called Grindin’.

During the sessions, however, it just so happened that Justin Timberlake was also recording next door. “They was like, yow, when you finish that verse come over. It was just me, the engineer, Pharrell and Justin Timberlake,” Sean Paul said. Though slightly intrigued by the invitation, it was further encouraged by Pharrell, so Paul decided to go. Sean explained, “I’m all for understanding if somebody wants they privacy, but the producer I’m working with just told me, come over, get involved”. “So I went over there and dude [Timberlake] is playing on the piano and he looks up like, ‘who is this?’ (referring to Paul)… Pharrell is like, oh this is Sean Paul, you don’t know Sean Paul?” but a confused and unimpressed, Timberlake responded “Nah.”

Sean said, Pharrell then nudged him to give the pop star a sample of his work, and feeling somewhat of a schmuck the deejay belted out the hook to Gimme The Light. To his satisfaction, Timberlake recognized the song, and said, “Oh oh, I know you …” then got to his feet, but only to escort Sean to someone outside who would be more eager to meet him – the bodyguard. It turned out, Justin’s bodyguard wasn’t really that psyched to meet him either. The Barbadian “big man” who was asleep in a van outside had to take a few seconds to determine who the Deport Dem deejay actually was, but eventually did nonetheless. By then Justin had returned to the studio by himself, leaving Sean Paul and the bodyguard to exchange a few pleasantries about island life. That’s when it clicked to Paul that Justin Timberlake had just thrown him out of the building.

You mentioned that you started working on “Take Me Higher” eight years ago with Pharrell Williams. What prompted you to revisit that song for the album?

I was always going to put that on an album. You don’t get a Pharrell record with that groove and not give it to the people (laughs). I was holding that one in the back pocket. As soon as that groove comes on on the album, it just lifts up your spirit. That’s just what Pharrell does. I didn’t put it on the Blurred Lines album because back then it was a little more bare. We got together a few years ago, and we added the horns and some guitar. Then we added that soulful intro with the strings that we didn’t have eight years ago. It was the new elements that lifted it up to another place.

SG Lewis Talks About The Neptunes

I always loved music growing up, but the first time I thought about it professionally was when I saw The Neptunes on MTV. It was a behind-the-scenes look at Pharrell and Chad Hugo in the studio. I was quite a shy kid and so when I saw them making music, but in a role that wasn’t on stage performing, I was like, “Hang on a minute, I want to do that!” I was about nine or ten and, at the time, the idea of being on stage scared the hell out of me.

Back when I only had one song out, “Warm”, I got a message from Scott Vener, this guy in LA who was the music supervisor for Entourage and became well known for amazing music syncs, as well as the radio show he cohosts with Pharrell. He said, “I love your song. I want to put it in my TV show – it’s a HBO show called Ballers.” I was just like, “OK, cool” – I didn’t realise the magnitude of the opportunity at all. He kept texting me in the run-up, saying, “Are you ready?

This is going to change your life. You need to stay up to watch the episode.” There was no HBO in the UK then, so I was just sat there in my room, waiting, at 3am. Suddenly, my phone exploded as hundreds of notifications came through at the same time. The song had the most Shazams off of any TV show that year and it did kind of change my life. I went from absolutely no one knowing who I was to my first American gig being Coachella.

DJ Drama Explains How Pharrell’s ‘In My Mind (The Prequel)’ Inspired Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’

“I think this is Tyler’s ode to that project.” Tyler, The Creator is a major fan of Pharrell Williams, long citing the Neptunes producer as a huge influence on his music. In a recent interview with Complex, DJ Drama explained how his own work on Pharrell’s 2006 mixtape, In My Mind (The Prequel), factored into Tyler’s latest Gangsta Grillz-inspired album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST.

“I think something that has to be discussed, [is that] there’s a generation of people that love the Gangsta Grillz series for what it was. And then there’s also another generation that pays a lot of homage to Pharrell’s In My Mind (The Prequel),” he said. “And Tyler is one of those [people]. Me and him discussed it [and] I see people discussing it. I think this is Tyler’s ode to that project, Pharrell’s In My Mind (The Prequel).”

Common Reflects On Working With The Neptunes

During the talk, Common reflected on having full albums produced by legendary producers like Kanye West, No I.D., J Dilla, and The Neptunes.

“I think the reason that has happened is because first of all, every one of those producers you named is some of the greatest ever. J Dilla is the greatest as far as the hip hop producers who just music translates in so many different places on the planet. No ID is legendary, one of the greatest ever to do it, and has touched so many parts of the culture. Pharrell, I’ve been listening to the Neptunes and thinking like ‘Man, they touch so many different places.’ And Kanye is genius and one of the greatest artists and producers this planet has ever seen. So look, I gravitate towards greatness, point blank,” Common said. “I want to be around people who are incredible at what they do.

People who I can grow from, learn from, who will elevate me. Each one of them made me better and challenged me. But another aspect to that is, as you said, each one had pretty much an album to themselves. I mean, you might hear with B, you might hear two J Dilla beats, but it was Kanye producing and two J Dilla beats. With Like Water for Chocolate it was J Dilla produced, you might hear a couple of Questlove pieces on that. The point being is, I like to… when I really zone in with somebody and really we get on the same vibration from every level, because music to me is it has so many dimensions to it. You creating, but you also connecting with that human being. Y’all going through different experiences, y’all sharing in whatever your vision is and what you want to create at that moment.”

Jay-Z Once Shared That Ego Caused A Rift Between Him & Timbaland

Jay-Z revealed ego caused him and Timbaland to part ways. “The fall out happened at the end of that album… A couple of songs were getting leaked and they were his songs, and it just ruined the whole process,” Jay-Z told BBC Radio 1 (via NME). “Kanye, who was executive producer of The Blueprint 3 was like, let’s get Tim, let’s bring Tim in, and we were all inviting of him and he just wasn’t accepting of the process. It seemed like it was more about him than the actual album.”

“When you go and make an album, you have to put all ego aside… he wasn’t accepting of that thing and that was almost the last straw type of thing, and we just went our separate ways,” he continued. “After those concerts and he came back, I’d seen a new Timbaland, he had this maturity and this growth and I was like, ‘Oh, ok, this is gonna work out’,” Jay-Z revealed. “It was over petty stuff,” Timbaland said in an interview with Revolt. “It was more personal and I was wrong. I was wrong. When I was working with Justin [Timberlake], he sent me a text. ‘We need to talk. We need to hook back up.’”

When Timbaland and Jay-Z would officially meet after their falling out, it was a touching moment between the two. “We looked at each other and just gave each other a hug,” he continued. “He was like, ‘What you been doing, man?’ ‘Man,’ I said, ‘I’m right. I’m back. I got my mind right.’ He said, ‘You look totally different.’ I was like, ‘I get it now. I understand life a little more.’” “I felt like, ‘What in the world? Who is trying to sabotage our friendship?’ ” Timbaland told MTV News. “That bothers me. I respect my friends, because I don’t got a lot of them, and he’s one of my friends in the music industry. I felt like, ‘I’ll remove myself. If people wanna play us against each other, I’ll bow out.’”

Bron Digital has signed up a slate of A-list voices for Fables, a new animated series that will launch the animated division of production group Bron Media Corp (Joker, Judas and the Black Messiah). Among the talents lending their voices to the series are Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit), Alexa Demie (Euphoria), Diljit Dosanjh (Honsla Rakh), Anthony Ramos (In The Heights) and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley).

Ricky Gervais will narrate the series, in which classic fables such as The Tortoise and The Hare, The Lion and The Mouse and The Boy Who Cried Wolf are given a modern-day twist. Bron Digital is planning to accompany the series with an immersive online community as well as Fables-themed interactive games. Created by producer Kevin Turen (Pieces of a Woman), the Fables series will be directed by Azazel Jacobs (French Exit) from scripts by Kyra Noonan.

Beatclub, the music platform and marketplace set up by Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Timbaland, will produce select tracks for the series. Fables is executive produced by Bron’s Jason Chen and Aaron L. Gilbert together with Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Andrew Barrer and Gabe Ferrari. Creative Wealth Media’s Jason Cloth, Suraj Maraboyina and Chris Cole serve as associate producers. Bron Releasing is handling global sales for the series.

Fables is the first program from Bron Digital, the new animation production and service company from indie powerhouse Bron Media Corp. The division will produce long-form animation for series television, as well as short-form content and features. The series was created using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, a real-time 3D digital creation tool originally designed for video games that is being touted as a potential game-changer for the animation industry.

Mark Ronson Is Still in Awe Of Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’

Mark Ronson has been producing since the turn of the millennium, and in that time he has worked with everyone from Amy Winehouse to Lady Gaga to Dua Lipa to Bruno Mars, with whom he created “Uptown Funk,” one of the highest-selling singles of all time. He is also the presenter of an excellent TED Talk on the history of sampling and has continued that journey of musical curiosity with the Apple TV show Watch the Sound, which explores the untold stories behind music creation and the lengths producers and creators are willing to go to find the perfect sound. Between all that, he finds time to host the FADER Uncovered podcast, on which he interviews artists ranging from David Byrne to Haim. Busy guy.

Recently, Ronson’s dance card also included appearing on Switched on Pop for another one of our Modern Classics discussions. The song he chose for our talk is an iconic ’90s jam: Ginuwine’s “Pony,” produced by Timbaland and Static Major, which continues to serve as an example of the ways that innovation and radical experimentation undergird even the biggest of pop smashes.

Nate Sloan: What do you think makes “Pony” endure? After 30 years, it still slaps. It still just explodes out of the speakers.

When you asked me to pick a modern classic, the first place my brain went was, What was a record that was a full paradigm shift? Like, when that record came out, nothing was the same? I remember the song from a purely DJ standpoint. I’d been DJ-ing for a couple of years in hip-hop clubs in New York, and there was a tempo that your set had to follow. There was old-school hip-hop that tended to be faster, like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim and fun things from the ’80s. Hip-hop in the ’90s got kind of slower and moody. Then you had Puffy and Biggie, a little more shiny but all in this 90 or 110 beats-per-minute range, and that’s where your set resided.

And then “Pony” came in.

You just had to stop all the other songs that you were playing because there was nothing to mix this into. It was 60 beats per minute. It was like nothing else. And if you stop the song in a hip-hop club, you’re in danger of a bottle being thrown at you in the DJ booth — this was not something that you would do unless you really knew that what you were about to play was going to be an event. So not only was it sonically so inventive, but from a DJ perspective, it was like, Oh shit. After that, Timbaland became influential, and you had the Dirty South movement and all the Atlanta hip-hop and stuff from Texas that was around that tempo. But at that initial moment, it was just an island. You couldn’t mix it with anything, and it sounded like it came from outer space.

Charlie Harding: A lot of people know “Pony” as a slow, sexy jam — the tempo is compelling in that way. What else in the song’s sonics make it a modern classic?

It just sounds incredible. There’s a lot of mythology around how Timbaland came up with that sound. Apparently, he was playing with his drum machine, and, by accident, he turned the tempo knob down from 120 to 60 and invented this new sound.

It’s actually funny listening to it now. I only ever listened to it at like 200 decibels in a nightclub. To hear it quietly in headphones, there’s a lot of weird shit going on in the background. You can hear his breath. We forget, because he had so many hits, just how eccentric Timbaland’s brain actually is. He’s a weirdo disguised as this handsome, built dude — like a lot of great producers. Pharrell’s a weirdo. Chad’s [Hugo, Pharrell’s partner in the Neptunes] a weirdo. You don’t make music like that without being odd.

And because I’m a beat guy, I haven’t even spoken about the vocals. “Pony” is so instant and naughty enough that it feels dirty in the club, but then it’s PG enough that you could get it on daytime radio and kids think it’s fun to sing.

N.S.: I found an interview with Timbaland where he describes a certain level of accident with this song. He was scrolling through a rack mount and then found this particular effect, and it just suddenly clicked. It made me wonder if you’ve had similar moments — like, just something accidental happens and all of a sudden, you’re like, Oh, that’s it.

That’s the entire theme of the TV show Watch the Sound. It’s these accidents — like, Roger Linn made the LinnDrum to sound as much like a real drummer and a real snare drum as he could. That’s why his machine was so coveted. And then Prince tunes the snare drum by accident one day, and it goes from like ch-ch-ch to, like, BOOOOOSH. Suddenly, that’s the fucking coolest sound ever. And then you get drummers tuning their drum to sound like a LinnDrum. The main tenets that we think of are the song and the melody, but all the other shit is definitely accidents — even plunking your hand down on a piano keyboard and getting a weird voicing or a cluster chord that you wouldn’t think to play. That can sometimes just set you off and running. So much of it are those happy accidents.

N.S.: One episode of Watch the Sound is about Auto-Tune and vocal processing. We related to it because we wrote a book called Switched on Pop, and the epilogue was about Paul McCartney’s 2019 song “Get Enough.” We were surprised that he uses synthesizers and Auto-Tune and drum programming. And in that episode of Watch the Sound, you talk to Sir Paul, and he didn’t seem to have a lot of hesitation about embracing new techniques.

Everybody forgets, because we’re so warm and fuzzy when we think of the Beatles, that not only was their stuff more badass than we maybe remember, but they were always on the cutting edge of technology. That’s why, at that moment, they were always pushing the engineers in Abbey Road. Paul was always on the cutting edge of everything.

I remember when I worked with him on his New album. At that point in my career, I had gotten … not lazy, but I think … well, yeah, fuck it. I got lazy. I’d worked so hard for 12 years to establish myself that after Version [Ronson’s 2007 album] and Back to Black [Winehouse’s 2007 album, produced by Ronson], I was like, Oh, cool, everyone likes it when I’m the retro guy. I guess I’ll just fucking latch on to that. And I watched people around me, Diplo and others who I was friendly with, really learning the new technology while I was just falling back on what I had. I remember going in with Sir Paul and thinking like, Okay, I’ll do my thing where I make classic, great recorded band arrangements, a couple of little hip elements. And he came in with a CD he had been listening to and played me “Climax,” by Usher. I was like, Oh my God. Produced by Diplo and Ariel Rechtshaid with Nico Muhly arrangements on it. And I was honest, like, “This is great. What do you like about this? ’Cause I’m not very good at this.” He said, “I just like the space.”

Since then, from working closely with Diplo or BloodPop or Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, I have internalized the idea that “I don’t want to just lean on someone else to do the cool tricks and the programming. I want to learn how to do it myself.” So Sir Paul always seems to be pushing you, and wants to push his own stuff, and it’s amazing.

Justine Skye Talks Working With TImbaland (July 8) (2021)

Dotty is joined by New York R&B artist Justine Skye on today’s The Dotty Show on Apple Music 1 to talk about her new Timbaland-produced album, 'Space and Time’. In the interview Justine discusses whether the pandemic helped her create a better album, working with super-producer Timbaland, her favourite Timbaland music, collaborating with Justin Timberlake, working with Rema and more.

On releasing her album 'Space And Time’….

Oh my gosh, I am so relieved. I've been working on this project for almost a year and it's been such a special process because this is a moment that I'll never get back. In this experience that we went through as a World, this pandemic that we went through, and creating this project during the pandemic, we'll never get that experience again. So I really got to focus in, and I had a lot of space and time to really think about this project and figure out what I wanted my sound to be and how we wanted to present this to the World.

On whether the pandemic helped her create a better album...

Absolutely. I feel like it told me a lot about myself, as a person and also as an artist. It also connected Timbaland and I. I don't know if we would have connected in this way if not for what happened, because I don't know if he would have had as much time. And honestly, if you see the documentary that we put out, he's just saying this moment really sparked something in him and made him fall in love with the process of creating a whole body of work again.

On how she started working with Timbaland...

So my team they've worked with Tim in the past and so they've already brought up the conversation of us working together and then the pandemic hit and I was like: “Well, what do we do?”. I was supposed to go on tour, I was supposed to do a lot of things that got cancelled, and I just started doing covers on Instagram to pass the time. Because a lot of artists they didn't know what they were going to do at this point in time, so I just started singing and he reached out to me. He was like: "Hey, I want to do an Instagram video with you." And I'm like: “Really?" I thought he wanted to do a cover so I brought up one of his songs that I really liked, and he was like: "Nah, let's do an original song." and so that was ‘Intruded'. He sent me the beat for ‘Intruded’ and we went off.

On her favourite Timbaland-produced song growing up...

There's too many to name, but honestly ‘Say It Right’ is one of my favourites with Nelly Furtado. So the fact that he used those drums on my album, when I came to the studio and I heard that beat, I was like: “No, you did not. No, you did not!”. And that's on ‘In My Bag’. So I was like, oh my gosh, actually, I was just speaking to him. And he was like, "Yo, In My Bag, you got to go hard for that song. That song could change your life.”

On whether Timbaland’s body of work intimidated her...

1million%! I was so nervous the first time he reached out to me, the first time he sent me a beat, and then the first time we were in the studio together. And then after the 10th 'Space And Time' session that we did on Instagram, we were just like, all right, we got to turn this into a project, we can't just keep doing these Instagram videos … This is such a milestone for me and such an accomplishment for me to have completed this project during this time. I've always wanted to work with Timbaland and the fact that I got to do so with such amazing features on the album, too, that I've looked up to, it's really a moment that I'll never get back and I'll appreciate it for the rest of my life. He has all the plaques on his walls, too, so I felt like I was getting the energy from everyone in there as I was recording.

On working with Justin Timberlake…

He's been giving advice along the way through this independent journey. When we finished the project, we sent it to him just to see what he would think and he was like: "Well, the only thing missing on this, is me." And I'm like: "I'm sorry, what?" Never in a million years did I think that I was about to get a feature from Justin Timberlake. Someone who I actually grew up listening to, who actually helped form my taste in music as well. Timbaland spoke with Rolling Stone about what’s coming next for an industry in wild flux. What’s the single biggest disruption you expect to happen in music in the next 10 years?

This can be related to technology, business models, genres, live music, music distribution — whatever you have had your eye on. Once in a generation we see some kind of shift in the music business — the last one was from downloads to streaming. The next revolution is going to be in the creator space, where there are millions of kids making music in their bedrooms. The industry is responding by creating platforms for music creators to share their beats, soundpacks, loops, et cetera. The next revolution will be all about that. That’s why we formed [the newly launched music marketplace] Beatclub, which aims to be an important creative hub for the industry.

How about in the next 50 years?

Streaming has really globalized culture in such powerful ways, and I predict that music is going to reflect that. Any local musical movement has the potential to go global in the future.

Considering the speed of tech advancements, how do you expect your own music career to change in the future?

I think this year has shown that we can create music together, we can work closely together in a cohesive way, even if we’re in completely different cities. And although there’s a certain vibe lost by not being in the same room, it’s clear to me that technology has enabled collaborators to span thousands of miles to work together in real time. And that’s already produced some beautiful music.

What’s the most overrated idea or trend in music right now? What’s the most undervalued?

You can’t overstate the importance of the song. It’s always been about a great song and it always will be.

What business advice would you give a young musician just starting out?

Learn the business. Build your copyrights! And believe in yourself — don’t give up.

Federico Vindver Reveals Timbaland Is Working On A New Solo Album

Producer Federico Vindver has been interviewed by Music Radar where he revealed that Timbaland is working on a new album “some of the most incredible music that I’ve heard in my life” Discussing his time in the studio with Timbaland, he says “When I work with Tim[baland] there’ll be Timbo, me, two other producers, four different rigs with Ableton, all going into a master computer with Pro Tools.

“Timbo will say ‘I have this really crazy beat’, and one of the other guys will make the bass, and I’ll add some sounds. We jam that way - like a band - and we’re extremely quick because we’ve worked together. Like 30 seconds - in 30 seconds everybody has added their parts and you have a track.” Vindver has also been sharing his thoughts on working with Timbaland on the new Justin Timberlake record, explaining:

“We’d be in the studio with Justin Timberlake and a lot of times it’s just me going through patches and they’re like ‘oh, that’s amazing’. It’s the sound that people react to. But it’s got to have playability, too. It has to be designed in a way that can be expressive. Because I’m a pianist I want to be able to feel how I feel when I’m playing the piano.”

The final track that stuck out on bb u ok? was “One More Day” with Mr. Carmack and Mija. “One More Day” is an emotional piece with compelling backbeats and tempos as the three artists come together to create some magic in the studio. The song brings back the same melody as the intro track, which offers a proper ending to this journey of an album. With contrasting vocals between San Holo and Mija, it brings out a deeper meaning through what feels like a conversation with a touch of nostalgia.
